Under the slogan ‘Cookery and martial arts’, Saalburg Castle hosted an event on the Whitsun weekend in 2024. In addition to gladiators, who were responsible for the martial arts, we were there with the whole range of Roman cuisine to cater for the aspect of cookery. At several stands, we gave visitors a taste of simple, rustic cuisine and fresh cervisia, served tasty globi, baked bread in local ovens, demonstrated the meals prepared by soldiers in the marching camp and presented Roman tableware. However, the centrepiece of the presentation was our Roman cookery kitchen, which freshly prepared and served a total of 15 different dishes from the sophisticated Roman cuisine of Apicius over the two days of the event. And, of course, a sip of Roman mulsum was not to be missed to toast the successful weekend with the numerous guests.
