At the State Garden Show in Neuss, we transformed the old horse racing track into a Roman camp over the first weekend in August. With a tent camp for the legionaries, a civilian outer camp and a spacious parade ground, our camp had everything needed for a fitting display – after all, we were returning to ancient Novaesium, to which ‘our’ Legio VI Victrix was transferred from Spain in AD 70 during the Batavian Revolt. As early as Friday afternoon, the troops assembled to take part in a ceremony on the stage at the State Garden Show; later, WDR also reported on the setting up of our camp via a live link. On Saturday and Sunday, in glorious sunshine, numerous visitors strolled with interest through the camp’s streets and listened to detailed explanations of the lives of Roman civilians and soldiers.
