A weekend at the field forge

On 17 and 18 May, a small delegation from our association visited the Freudenthaler Sensenhammer site in Leverkusen with the field forge and other metalwork. The public was able to see how the small forge was operated with charcoal and two hand-operated bellows to carry out small forging jobs. A field forge like this allowed Roman soldiers to carry out repairs to their equipment and make urgently needed replacements in the field.

In the immediate vicinity of our camp, a smelting furnace was also used to demonstrate how pig iron was extracted from lumps of ore in Roman times, which could then be used for forging work. This gave spectators a comprehensive insight into the various work steps involved in forging.
