Romans and Celts on the Martberg

On the first weekend in May, Romans and Celts met at the reconstruction of a Lenus Mars temple on the Martberg in Pommern on the Moselle. We were there with our military camp and a small civilian area to present the public with some excerpts from Roman military and civilian life. Our Celtic friends from the Sucellos group had also set up camp so that we could test our strength on the battlefield every day and then explain the differences between Roman and Celtic equipment to the audience. In keeping with the location of the event, we also performed a religious offering ceremony and a consecration of the signa on both days - with Latin texts for the prayers and soldiers' oaths. To cater for the physical well-being of the guests, we also helped to operate the Roman oven. The result was an all-round successful event at which not only the spectators but also the Romans and Celts visibly enjoyed themselves.
