Behind the scenes: Material maintenance

With the onset of spring and the approaching start of the first major events, there is usually a major commitment to material maintenance. There is no fixed rule for this, so the appointment can take place in April at the car park of our club vehicles or in May at the venue of the first major event. In any case, many helping hands are needed, as the large items on the inventory list are due for maintenance - while many of the smaller items have already been taken care of in the workshop during the winter. The leather tents in particular need large open spaces so that we can lay them out, check them for damage and make them resistant to the upcoming tasks with a good dose of leather oil and grease. Of course, a small canister of oil and a cloth won't get us very far. Instead, grease and oil are mixed in vats and then applied to large areas with scrubbing brushes. Nevertheless, it takes hours until all the tents have been treated. Minor damage such as torn eyelets or loose seams are repaired at the same time if possible. This year, some tents have also finally been given a nice tabula with the name of the legion. But it's not just leather tents that are on the list: civilian tents also need care, armoury tools need to be cleaned, artillery checked and repaired if necessary, and many other things to ensure that nothing stands in the way of a successful season.
